Q: Why doesn't the Deaf client bring his/her own interpreter? Why should my business incur the expense? A: According to the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) of 1990, all persons, regardless of disability, are entitled to equal access to goods and services. Therefore, the entity requesting services for a deaf client/employee will be responsible for all charges incurred to facilitate communication. (Interpreting services may be tax-deductible, check with your tax professional) Q: Why should I secure interpreting services through Deaf Access? Why not do it myself? A: Different levels of national certification and state classification can make it difficult for businesses, medical facilities, etc., to understand which interpreter is best suited for an assignment. For example, interpreting in a legal setting is best left to an interpreter with national certification or top-level state classification. We maintain a current directory of every interpreter in the state who maintains certification/classification. Based on our knowledge of each interpreter's strengths and skills, we are able to select the most qualified interpreter for each particular assignment. Q: What information will I need to provide when requesting interpreting services? A: As much as possible! Basics include: 1.
Date and time of assignment (including start time and end time). Q: How much notice do I need to give Deaf Access? A: Again, as much as possible! Two weeks notice is advisable, however requests can be made anytime. Please be aware that if services are requested with LESS THAN 24 (BUSINESS) HOURS NOTICE, a last minute rate will apply. For more information on our fees and policy, please contact us at (919) 792-2121. Q: Why do some assignments require two interpreters? A: Sign language interpreting requires extreme mental and physical stamina. To avoid medical problems such as Carpel Tunnel Syndrome or Repetitive Motion Injury, interpreters must be provided with regular breaks. Deaf Access will work with each individual to determine if a team interpreter is required. |
